Was it possible to live a Christian life in the ancient polis? This question was a recurring one for the church fathers. One particularly vocal critic of urban life in late antiquity was John Chrysostom (c. 349‒407), who was active in two of the most vibrant metropolises of the time, Antioch and Constantinople. Jan R.
